Our Story
Your hometown team - Landon and Elizabeth Brown - bringing full service grocery back where it belongs.
For us, this store is more than a business plan. It’s a return to our roots and a commitment to the community we love. Our family’s history in grocery stretches back to the 1930's across six generations, beginning with one of our earliest stores in Gardner, Colorado, and continuing through the last three generations serving Prowers County and the Arkansas Valley.
In 1970, FB Becquet took over his first grocery stores, IGA and Orchard Plaza, which later became Prowers County Market at 906 East Olive in Lamar. His daughter, Denise Brown, grew up working in the store and eventually opened her own grocery stores with her husband Hugh Brown. They raised their sons in Lamar, where the boys also spent their childhoods helping in their parents' and Grandpa FB’s stores. In 1998, FB sold Prowers County Market to Safeway and retired.
Landon Brown, FB’s grandson and Denise’s second son, managed his first family grocery store in 2009 with the opening of First Choice Market in Walsenburg. Landon and his wife, Elizabeth, have three children and have been eager to continue the family legacy in a place they call home.
We’re focused on the future: a strong local economy, a reliable shopping experience, and a store built with the kind of care only a hometown team can deliver. This is Prowers County's market through and through, and we are excited to be a part of it.
